How is notice pay calculated?

A party terminating an indefinite-term employment contract must observe the notice periods in Article 17 of the Labour Law No. 4857. A party that does not must pay notice pay equal to the wages for the notice period. The calculator follows these steps:

  1. Length of serviceThe period between the start date and the date notice was given.
  2. Notice period2, 4, 6 or 8 weeks depending on length of service.
  3. Daily wageThe monthly gross wage including regular benefits divided by 30. Unlike severance pay, there is no cap.
  4. AmountDaily gross wage × days in the notice period (14, 28, 42 or 56).
  5. DeductionsIncome tax and stamp duty of 0.759% are deducted; social security contributions are not. Income tax depends on your cumulative taxable income, so the calculator uses the bracket you select.

When is notice pay due?

  • An employer who terminates an indefinite-term contract without giving notice or paying the notice period in advance owes notice pay to the employee.
  • An employee who leaves without just cause and without observing the notice period may owe notice pay to the employer.
  • Notice pay is not due where the contract is terminated for just cause (Labour Law, Arts. 24 and 25).
  • Fixed-term contracts end automatically at the end of the term, so notice pay generally does not arise.

These are minimum periods and can be extended by contract; if your contract provides a longer period, the calculation should use it. See our labour law guide for details.

Time limits and mediation

Notice pay claims are time-barred five years after the contract ends (Labour Law, Additional Art. 3), and mandatory mediation applies before filing suit. If you worked at least one year and the termination qualifies, you can also calculate your severance pay.
