Attorney

Attorney Mehmet Bilgi

Mehmet Bilgi is an attorney at law registered with the Istanbul Bar Association. He founded Bilgi Law Firm in 2020 and personally handles every file, from the first consultation until the judgment becomes final.

His work covers the disputes individuals most often face, such as family, inheritance, tenancy, employment and consumer matters, as well as the legal procedures foreign nationals go through when buying property, applying for Turkish citizenship or obtaining a residence permit in Turkey. He works with clients in Turkish and English.

He considers explaining legal processes in plain language, and sharing time limits and risks openly from the outset, to be the basis of his professional work. The guides on this website are written with the same approach.

Attorney Mehmet Bilgi's registration can be checked on the Istanbul Bar Association register; the registration of any attorney in Turkey can be checked on the official website of the Union of Turkish Bar Associations.

Frequently asked questions

Questions about the firm

How many lawyers work at the firm?

The firm is run by its founder, Attorney Mehmet Bilgi, who handles each file personally from the first meeting until it is concluded. Where a matter requires other professionals, such as sworn translators, court experts or accountants, they are involved as the file requires.

Can a foreign national be represented without coming to Turkey?

In most matters, yes. Once you grant a power of attorney, the lawyer can represent you before courts, enforcement offices, the land registry and other authorities. The power of attorney can be issued at a Turkish consulate or before a notary in your country with an apostille, and must then be translated into Turkish by a sworn translator in Turkey. Certain applications may still require your personal attendance.

How will I be kept informed about my case?

Significant developments, such as hearing dates, interim decisions, expert reports and the final judgment, are reported to you by email or phone in English. Court files in Turkey are kept on the electronic judicial network UYAP; holders of Turkish e-Government (e-Devlet) access can also view their files online.

What documents are signed when the engagement starts?

Usually two: a power of attorney before a notary (or a consulate abroad), which authorises the lawyer to represent you, and a written attorney fee agreement setting out the scope of the work and the fee. Under Article 163 of the Attorneys Act, a fee agreement can only be proven in writing.

Why are there no testimonials or case results on this website?

Advertising by lawyers to attract clients is prohibited in Turkey by Article 55 of the Attorneys Act and the rules of the Union of Turkish Bar Associations. The website therefore contains no testimonials, client names, success rates or comparisons, and is intended purely as a source of information.
